    The Toyota Highlander took on a refreshed look in 2017 to help keep pace with the ever-changing crossover segment. With the latest iteration still relatively new, we expect Toyota to carry this new look into 2018 without any noticeable changes. Reports indicate the Highlander will remain unchanged until around 2020, at which point it’ll reportedly move to the automaker's TNGA platform (Toyota New Global Architecture).

From the outside and inside, buyers likely won’t be able to tell the difference between the current model and the new one. We could see a few technological tweaks here and there, but nothing too dramatic or noticeable. As a carryover model, we also expect the standard features, which in 2017 include projector beam headlights, LED taillights, 18-inch wheels, a rearview camera, a 6.1-inch touchscreen audio system with sic speakers, a tilt and telescoping wheel and more, to carry on unchanged.

We also expect the powertrains to continue unchanged into the new year. If this proves true, then look for the Highlander to motor on with a standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder that produces 185 horsepower and an optional 3.5-liter V6 with 270 horsepower. For those looking for even better fuel economy, there is the Highlander Hybrid with its 29 mpg combined.

    Like most 2017 Toyotas, the current Highlander is equipped with standard lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise and auto emergency braking. Thanks to the latter and its safe construction, the Highlander earned the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ designation. With no changes on the horizon, we anticipate this rating carrying on in the new model year.

Pricing & Release Date

    The 2018 Toyota Highlander is expected to start production in September 2017. We currently anticipate an on-sale date sometime in November.

While it’s too early for official pricing, given it’s a carryover model, we don’t expect the new Highlander to stray far from the 2017 model, which ranges from $31,570 to $47,200 destination fees included.
